Wicking garden beds can simply be described as giant self-watering pots. They are garden beds that operate on the concept of capillary action, drawing water from a reservoir at the bottom.  Moisture is drawn up through the soil similar to a wick via osmosis. Imagine a piece of tissue paper being dipped in a glass of water and watching the water “climb” the paper. This is wicking. This process lets the plants decide how much water they need and when they need it.

In short, plants are watered from below instead of from above. This reduces time spent in watering the garden bed.

Invented by Australian engineer, Colin Austin, wicking garden beds have gained great popularity as a terrific water-wise garden alternative. They are great for thirsty plants (like vegetables), particularly in areas affected by water restrictions or low rainfall. Water wastage is minimised as water is delivered where it’s needed – the plant roots.

Viking Plastics’ wicking beds can be installed above or below ground

Fabrication

Above Ground

Viking Plastics’ above ground wicking beds are fabricated using Paneltim® – a 50mm dual skin plastic construction panel. Paneltim® has superior strength and rigidity due to its cross-ribbed internal structure. Panelim® can easily be welded to any dimension. Welding is done via a buttwelder, hot air or extrusion welders.

There are many benefits to using Paneltim® panels. They are UV stabilised with excellent thermal & biosecurity properties. They are chemical resistant and easy to clean.

Below Ground

Small below ground wicking beds are fabricated using robust 6mm polyethylene (HDPE).

Large below ground wicking beds are fabricated using Paneltim®.

Finishes

Viking Plastic’s above ground wicking beds may be clad in a variety of finishes including:

  • Timber
  • pressed or perforated metal panels
  • decorative contact adhesive
  • render
