A rain garden collects rainwater runoff from an impermeable surface (eg a roof or driveway). Water deferred into the rain garden is filtered by the vegetation before slowly moving into the stormwater system. Excess water is removed via an overflow pipe at the top which directly sends water into the stormwater system. This prevents water back up and flooding.
Rain gardens have become very popular in residential and commercial urban sensitive water design. They assist to keep rainwater on site longer during a rainfall. This has a positive effect on the health of urban waterways. Firstly, by slowing the flow of water into the stormwater system, and secondly, by filtering the water through the soil thus remove any pollutants.
Rain gardens can be above or below ground tanks, or formed on a natural slope of land by installing a rain garden containment liner. A rain garden only holds water during and after a rainfall. They generally drain within 12-48 hours. As a result, a rain garden is usually dry so they don’t breed mosquitoes.
